19th Century Irish Kitchen Dresser

An exceptional late 19th century genuine Irish traditional kitchen dresser . Made by Jim Gardiner, Scullibeen, Crossmolina, Co Mayo around 1890 for a family in nearby Ardagh where it remained for a number of generations. A member of the same family sold it to its current owner who has lovingly restored it. He has stripped its original paintwork, treated and painstakingly polished it with beeswax. Irish dressers are distinguishable from their Welsh and English counterparts being made in one piece, rather than two. Sits on sledge feet, a characteristic of freestanding dressers from the West of Ireland. As the sledge feet were attached by dovetail joints they could be removed and replaced thereby prolonging the life of the dresser for future generations. The shelves were attached with morticed joints and the dresser comes with its original drop-in shelf plate supports. This is an exceptional example of Irish traditional furniture.
