Learn how to plan and execute a passage by day and by night with and without your electronic navigation aids. HANDS-ON USE OF CHARTPLOTTERS – GARMIN, NAVIONICS, C-MAP Paper charts. Waypoints. Compass bearings. Variation and Deviation. Tides, tidal heights. Tidal currents and their effects on passage planning. Weather conditions, synoptic charts, weather forecasts. How to avoid weather risks. Pilotage. Recognising buoys by day and night. Vessel day shapes and lights. Limitations of electronic navigation. Rules for Prevention of Collisions at Sea. This is an extended version of the Irish Sailing Coastal Navigation for Small Boats course, to include extensive hand-on experience on real chart-plotters, using waypoints to correctly plan and execute your coastal passage by day and by night.
