Pair “Dublin and Kingstown Railway” Prints
- 2 days
- Naas, Co. Kildare
Description
In terrific condition, these prints were first sketched by Andrew Nichols and then engraved and aquatinted by John Harris (both Irishmen), which gives them an appearance both primitive and lively. This railway line was the first to be opened in Ireland in 1834 and the original prints would have been swiftly produced prior to this to take advantage of an excited market. Presumably, on the opening day and thereafter, the carriages would have been full of passengers and the cuttings and bridges crammed with excited spectators. Unusual, full of life and interest, a must for the lover of antiquarian Ireland. Framed in gold, mounted on dark green card. P.S. Kingstown was the old name for Dun Laoghaire. Frame 35 by 32 cms
